How can multi-material prints level up your combat robot?

3D printing opened up a new world of design posibilities for combat robot designers. However, it's only recently that robots have started using multi material 3D prints to further optimize their parts. While TPU has great flexibility and impact resistance, some applications require additional rigidity, strength, or heat resistance. Now you can optimize the material properties of your parts to meet your needs.

If you're curious about how multi-material printing can level up your robot, email us at hotbotprinting@gmail.com. We love talking about robots and are happy to set up a free meeting to talk about your specific part!

Printing Constraints

Maximum number of materials: 3

Maximum part size: 300 x 320 x 325mm (11.8 x 12.5 x 12.7in)

We cannot print both PEBA and TPU in the same print, or multiple colors of PEBA and TPU at the same time.

Maximum rigidity, minimal failure risk

TPU-CF Nylon Drive Rails

TPU makes for very impact resistant drive rails, but drive belts can skip when the flexible TPU deforms. On his beetleweight overhead spinner Phantom IV, Nik Buchholz uses a center section of CF-Nylon connecting his pulleys and drive motor to provide maximum rigidity only where needed. The surrounding interlocked TPU holds this together even if it cracks during a fight, ensuring optimal belt tension and drive performance without sacrificing durability.

2-in-1 parts save space and reduce weight

Motor Wire Guards

Many builders use a rigid material to protect their brushless outrunners from rubbing up against the internals of their robot. On his 12lb beater, Supernova, Eziquiel Gonzales-Solano combined this GF-Nylon part with the TPU shock mount for his drive motor. By combining multiple parts into one, he saves weight and space inside his robot.

Temperature Resistance

Heat Resistant Flamethrower Parts

The 3lb flamethrower Clyde is made mostly of TPU, but requires special heat resistance around the burner. Builders Alex and Gabe Brown use a section of GF-Nylon, which is siginificantly more heat resistant, to stop their burner from melting through the robot.
